About me…

Hi, I’m Marcus, avid reader and fantasy nerd. I’m happy you found your way to my site, and I hope you enjoy your stay here.

If you don’t know me yet but are curious who I am and what I do, here are a few facts about me.

Dr. Marcus Reiß, author of Grammar of Magic, wearing a flat cap (black-and-white portrait)
  • By now I’m 7 times 7 years old, and I live in Germany, in North Rhine-Westphalia.
  • I’ve been reading fantasy and science fiction for about 35 years now, and I own a fairly large collection of English and German books.
  • I love literature, philosophy, science, languages, and culture, and I’d describe myself as a curious, open-minded and creative person.
  • I’m married to my wonderful wife, we have a daughter, a headstrong but lovable dog (Günni – or “Günther” when he’s up to mischief, see photos), and guinea pigs (who love to hide).
  • I make my living as a study and career counselor. I really enjoy my work because I get to support and guide young people on the sometimes complicated path of life.
  • I’ve been writing as a freelance author for a while now and have written two novels so far (unpublished).
  • Several of my university courses were taught in English, and I studied and earned my doctorate in education, philosophy, and German literature.
  • In my spare time, I write a lot, love being out in nature (as long as it’s not too hot), and I’m passionate about games of all kinds – board games, pen-and-paper RPGs, or console and PC games.
  • What has always fascinated me is human imagination, or more precisely, the creative energy living in each of us. Through it, we can all make the world a better, more colorful and livable place. The idea for “Grammar of Magic” came to me because I would have loved to read something that wove together my favorite subjects, history, cultural studies, philosophy, and magic, in a loose, narrative tone: easy to read, entertaining and yet gripping. I never found a book like that. So I sat down at my laptop myself: reading, researching, writing, reading again.
